I have been a bit lazy to write a real post for quite sometime now, there are quite few reasons for it apart from just laziness :)) which i won't go into details of.

The summer (actual summer months) in Dublin were like rainy season or more like all-time-pouring season, so it was also not helping in motivating to write anything. But finally the summer is back in autumn in Dublin. Isn't it great :))

Change is Universal - India

After a bit of searching, i found the excellent documentary which BBC did this year about India hosted by Sanjeev Bhaskar. And i must say, its one of best i have seen, potraying india in all forms and not just slums, snake charmers :) etc... which is still very much part of india too but its changing and as a country, we have lot more to offer in all aspects of life. I think, Sanjeev gives a very insightful view of the society which we have now, as i always say, its a huge country with lots of different cultures and its hard to put everything in one hour episode... but its good to see all ascepts of India or any country for that matter. Can't put all in here, so you gotta watch it :))

If you have a hour to spare and want to know more, have a look.. you would def. learn something :) .. And as he says in the beginning "its gott to be different.. different .." and he does that pretty well. Ah and if you don't know who Sanjeev is.. there is always Wikipedia.. LINK.

Hope you like it too and i would love to hear your viewpoint about it.

Pure Fun - Wii

wow, wii, so so cooool.. just cool. Today, for the first time, I played few hours of games on Nintendo Wii and man it is just so much more fun than all those Xbox's or the ever expensive PS3's. Bowling is like real bowling with the throws n all.. golf is like real golf with all the swings.. tennis like tennis.. and don't even try boxing.. after a few games.. its worns you out.. :)) .. i am sure other games are equally immersive..

Ultimate Frisbee

I have joined the summer league for Ultimate Frisbee here in Dublin, to have some summer (thou its hard to describe what irish summer is like) fun and further to get some sports done too :) .. As per the sport, if you don't know what is it, looks at what wikipedia says here about it. I would say its just pure fun to play. Thou' in the league, its a bit more professional and learning more pro rules and strategies for defense and offense. I would give the credit to Brad for introducing the sport to me, but i suppose never had the chance to play with him in Munich. Thou' last summer/autumn, did played some with friends back in Munich. Play it if you have a chance.. for fun and sports both. Enjoy the summer sun!!

There has been a lot of talk lately about the censorship imposed by fickr on user photos, banning members and blocking specific photos. Also, based on my experience on flickrCentral group, that the moderators often lock topics, discouraging sensitive conversations and sorts (who gets to decide that, thou' personally I didn't feel those topics were sensitive). They also have now safe, moderate, etc. settings for every flickr member based on his/her photos, decided by flickr management, which sounds bit crazy to me. Also, in news that they have blocked turning on "Safe Search Off" feature in some countries.

I am a huge fan of flickr and its service.. and it has helped me grow my love for photography to a higher level. I have spent hours exploring it :)) ..

Although it is a sensitive topic for both sides, who want some sort of censorship and who are against it. I totally accept if its under some sort guidelines. They can't just one day, block pictures and members.. a protocol is necessary.

Microsoft Photosynth & Surface Computing

The TED talks are meant to be instant fav., the time you see them. Here is one of most recent ones from March 2007. Blaise Aguera y Arcas of Microsoft shows a very interesting photo browsing, visualization, mutildimensionality technology called Photosynth and features which are mind-boggling and just leaves you wondering how technology will affect our lives in years to come. During the video, hear how the people gasp and hush's while he shows the awesome zooms he does on photos. He even got standing ovation for his talk, something which some people might probably won't relate to Microsoft in first place :). One of the best tech. demos of 2007.



A few weeks back, I posted about another cool demo by Microsoft, HERE. Also related to Jeff Han TED Talk in 2006. And, I thought it still might be few years before it comes out in market. But day before yesterday, Microsoft released the first commercial versions of it, calling it Surface Computing. (MS LINK). And wow, it def. takes computing to next level. Facebook Networking

For quite sometime now, I have been successfully avoiding getting signed up for another one of several networking sites around. And I seldom use the sites i have registered to, exception being orkut (to keep touch with some indian friends, apparently its quite huge there) and linkedIn (for its professional touch).

But yesterday, I signed up for facebook, and to be true, its been good fun. Their methodology seems different and i am sure, i won't be cluttered with random people (like in myspace) who i have noting to do with. But at same time, it gives options to do networking with groups from colleges, work places, regional etc etc and also same time, its like a personalized homepage with personalized contents. And yesterday, they even released some sort of facebook platform which will allow anyone (individual, companies) to make content for personalization.

In short - its different. Give it a try and if you know me personally, see you there :))

Shrek 3 Preview

Thanks to some Russians :), just watched the very awaited Shrek 3. Hmm, its kinda hard to put it into category, its not the best of the Shrek's but its def. an above average movie with stunning animations. The movie is a bit loose on story line-up, at least i thought so. Bit it has it good moments and a must see at least for once :). My fav. part was the "offspring's of Donkey and the Fire Dragon" .. perfect combination of flying-fire-donkey-dragon. You will also get to see some old fairy-tale characters. Overall, its an entertaining movie.

It was not as disappointing as the Spiderman 3, which was completly off-track, with tons of characters, plots, detours and too long with all the drama. Hopefully some good fast fight scenes kept me away from sleeping.

And looking forward to the final sequel of Pirates of the Caribbean. It has to be good ;)

I am sure everyone had seen and tried lot of different video sharing sites, and youTube def. has its big following but most of the times, the quality on youTube su*** bigtime too.

But remember our favourite compression technique DivX; DivX has a new video sharing site called stage6 and it rocks and the quality is awesome, like HD. Check it out.

Music Industry Sucks

I just received an email (and probably if you are living outside US and an avid pandora listener, you must have too) from Pandora Support giving the very unfortunate news that from tomorrow, they would be blocking access to Pandora from Ireland and all countries outside of the US. Some excerpts from the email:

We show your IP address is 'xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx', which indicates you are listening from Ireland.

Consequently, on May 3rd, we will begin blocking access to Pandora to listeners from your country. We are very sad to have to do this, but there is no other alternative.

We will keep a record of your existing stations and bookmarked artists and songs, so that when we are able to launch in your country, they will be waiting for you. We deeply share your sense of disappointment and greatly appreciate your understanding.

I appreciate Pandora's effort to send the email and for their disappointment. It is/was one of best services avaliable to listen to music of varied taste and got to hear several good singers from their recomendations.

Gonna miss it, until I find a proxy server ;) to listen to it.

But in short - music industry and their DRM & copyrights laws sucks big time. Also they want to increase their licensing fees for online radios, so its not only pandora, mebbe in future, they might just kill all.

Demonstrating - First Timer

For last few weeks, I have been demonstrating (TA for US system) for a software engineering project coursework to 3rd year students. Its been kinda strange to be on the other side. I took the position to gain some insight into tutoring, but only 6 weeks before the end of semester (sem ends this week) as they urgently needed someone to help out with project teams.

Telling students what they should do, seems a daunting task for myself. And then I keep imagining myself in their situation (until last year, i was in their position) and how to deal with students who don't work-at-all, work-a-bit and then there is always the one who does all the work. Its hard to make a choice between the one who does all the work and the one who doesn't do anything at all; but its still a team. And then if they don't complete assignments, then what, did they had valid reasons; late joiners to team, what about their reasoning. I am trying to be casual and do my task of motivating them to do their assignments, task completion and complete the project on time. Next week is final submission, will update about progress :)

yesterday, i posted about the losing of my personalized homepage on Google and today morning, when i woke-up and checked .. everything seems to be back now, with a new format but all is back to normal. Looks like google playing a game :)) but happy to see its back. Didn't realize earlier that Google must be having several back-ups of the pages and they got the stuff back from it. But anyhoo, Good Work Google and next time, inform me before deleting ;))

OK, whatever the problem is, this is not acceptable from a company like Google. Just returned from work and logged on to my google personalized page, all settings have been lost and its back to default settings. What the he**??

Asian-American Viewpoint

On my previous post about the VT massacre, Grace (my asian-american and now german friend :)) posted a comment which is worth mentioning in a separate post.

Here it goes in her words:

I think people are also shocked that the killer was an Asian-American kid. I know I was. I feel bad for his parents and sister, because I cannot imagine what they must be going through. I'm sure they are just as shocked as the rest of the country, as well as mortified, as well as grieving for the loss of their son and brother.

It is a strange situation because this kid was arguably insane, but at the same time, he knew what he was doing and he seemed to think he had been forced into the situation.

It is especially strange, because so far there have been no reports of bullying or torment from which the kid suffered, and it is just so odd for him to act out in this way without a clear trigger.

Acts like this scare me just as much as acts of terrorism. I also feel for all the victims and their families. It is a terrible way to die and just as with public acts of terror, the victims just seem so randomly chosen. I feel like it could be you or me or my friend in that situation.

Also, the US embassy in Berlin recently warned of terrorist acts that may target US citizens in Germany. That is also very scary. Remember the suitcases that were found on the train that luckily failed to detonate? It makes me slightly worried to be traveling on the trains as often as I do. There is no perceivable security that would deter such a situation from occurring, as far as I can see. It is truly a scary world that we are growing up in.

Somewhat Successful Malakar's Experiment

So the other day, after reading the article about the 300% increase in search activity for Sanjaya and Shyamali Malakar, I decided to post about it, here, to try to give some boost/exposure to my tiny blog in the huge internet world and to see if linking does help in getting some extra traffic. Here are the results, not great, but for my blog, worth mentioning :))

So, the graph of the no. of people (unique) visting the main blog page a week before I posted the post looked like this (FYI: the y-axis is 0 to 25):

For that particular day (Sunday, April 15), there is indeed a steep increase in the no. of visitors and 99.9% came through searching for either Sanjaya Malakar or his sister.

Its unbelievable, was just reading the news about the killings at one of best US university, Virginia Tech, by a gunman, who went on rampage across the campus, killing students. Its reported that atleast 32 people have been killed.

Experiment Sanjaya Malakar

Hopefully, by now somehow you might have heard of American Idol and its contestants. This is an experiment for my blog, if the results are good, would post them. But now back to this post.

If you are watching this season of AI, you are aware of Sanjaya Malakar, he has created ripples in american entertainment industry at age 17. He might not be the best contestant by voice, but def. hez a great entertainer esp. with his hair-do's every week.

And last week or so, his sister Shyamali Malakar, posted some pics of her with a guitar (involves explicit content) and that she is a hooter girl too. Not that, it should be related anyway to Sanjaya chances in AI, but I suppose given the coverage it has got, mebbe it is. I was reading some article that the search for both the names have jumped by like 350% in most image search engines.

Not even that, somehow, they are everywhere, on news, on blogs, on youtube, myspace, late-nights show, etc etc...

And the chances are expectionally high that he might win!!

Only if you are following American Idol this season, you must be aware of the underdog Sanjaya, american indian - last night conan made a sketch on american idol and he casts Prez Bush as Sanjaya. Enjoy the video, esp. the ending is best :)

Vista, Orb & Wireless

Have been using vista for few days now. Must say, its really sleek (even more than mac, n windows users don't have to hide from macs anymore) and fun to use. But some components like sidebar, explorer keep crashing all the time (even thou' without much problem). Further its a bit of a learning curve to use vista. Until now (ie. XP), you give me XP in any language and i can use it without even knowing the language, been using windows for years now (JFI: used Linux - still do n Macs both). But with vista, lot of changes and needs time getting accustomed to all the new functionalities. But i suppose its worth, feels less nerdy :)) to use it.

Orb? Great piece of software, to access and stream any of your data from base PC to any PC conntected to net, to PDA, to Xbox, etc. No need to carry or transfer data to any external google servers :).. just install on base PC, and access anywhere. Lot of technologies coming up in this direction, give it a shot, its def. useful if you wanna access n stream your digital files.

And with wireless, its just so much easier n fun to use. Now all my music, videos, web videos, photos, even directories n files are accesible anywhere with wireless and even better on my XDA.. just waiting to get the Xbox steup :))

Cricketing News

Its the ONLY sport we play on world level and its not a great news for the millions of cricket fans in India. Yesterday, we lost again in the crucial match of cricket world cup to qualify for the final 8 and now rest our of hopes of making it on an unlikely defeat for Bangladesh by debutants Bermuda on Sunday . If you are still wondering, what is cricket, read on wikipedia.

I am not ardant fan of cricket, used to be, but still feels bad that we can't even make it to top 8 in the ONLY sport we play and now a days, it seems all about money. No harm in making money from sport but its has crossed the limits where money is over the game. The equation is somethin like this probably, play local level exceptionally good, earn a spot in the national team, play some good games, make millions of bucks from fees and ads and forget the game.

Back in Dublin

Yesterday, I arrived back to Dublin, after a 3 weeks stint in Delhi. There was so much to write about while I was there, about the city itself, changes happening in Delhi (flyovers everywhere, metro, roads), rising cost of living (inflation, Malls), awesome food (street food, new joints, home-made), traffic (didn't try to drive my bro's new car), so n so. But offcourse, I didn't feel like writing anything, my laziness had taken over.

Back Home

Its been long long time since I have been home in Delhi, finally I am back and the feeling is beyond words.

Arrived home (delhi) on 1 March, met family and friends, celebrated holi (a festival of colors), gorgeous food (even the street one) and lot n lots of changes in the city itself (will write on it later) and chilling out.. the weather is very pleasant.

Few weeks ago, I posted about sharing some news, forgot about it myself :). But now time is ripe, so here it is.. Last month (after a wonderful & never-ending free time in Munich, trips across europe etc.). I decided to take my new research job and hence move to Dublin. From the land of famous german beer to the land of equally famous Irish beer and pubs :)), DUBLIN. Have heard a lot about the city in recent years, so expectations are high. Till now, in last 6 weeks, things are smooth, ok red-tapism is everywhere.. but the transition has been smooth. Can't say much about the city from my point view, still have to explore it. But it def. has a vibe to it. And yeah, the weather changes so equickly .. even before you can open your eyes. Enjoyin' the start, n hopefully will write more about it in coming weeks or months or years.. as it goes.

As per Munich (can't finish without mentioning it), its still like next to me, n will be forever.

And finally, I am going to Delhi next week for a month.. relaxing times.. and the good food :)

Milan Castle

As I mentioned earlier, the beautiful settings of Lake Como and Belagio. For recent ref., the latest Bond movie, was shot here, when he was recovering from enjuries :)

So what, if we cudn't skii, there was HOOOOTERS in Interlaken. We (not me) had like a 30 chicken wings at 1 AM in morning, after dinner n several beers. Jao is unbeatable in it.

Here is Jao, I bet he is unbeatable in eating Chicken Wings, I hav never seen anything like that. After dinner, and several beers, he had like 2 dozen chicken wings. And imp. thing - didn't throw up ;)
Once more Jao, somewhere along Lake Como, in summer this place wud be un-matchable

Woh Woh

its been so so long since I wrote something. I feel bad now :))
I do have somethings to tell all, but it has to wait a bit more, so in the mean time, I will say something about Italy.

During xmas, we made a road trip across Austria, Italy and Swiss. Italy was a welcome surprise, I just loved the place, architecture of the cities, culture, more so FOOD, COFFEE and SWEETS & ice cream (best i had). We visited Verona (of the Romeo Juliet fame), Venice (everything I say for this city would be less, Amazing, loved every moment I spent there, def. once again), Milan (highlight was the Leonardo DaVinci's original painting "The Last Supper", the feeling of being in the same room as DaVinci was ...), heading over to Lake Como and Belagio (beautiful settings of the alps and lake, a must visit in summer).

Not to leave, Interlaken and Zurich in Swiss (but no snow) and Innsbruck in Austria were great fun too.

Hope everyone had great start to the new year. This was most probably my last New Year in Munich as a resident, off-course I would be back for more :). Its a been a wonderful last few years here. We had a great dinner n celebrations yesterday.. Thanks Silvia, Grace, Herwig n all others for making it very special. 2007 is bringing a change for me, which I would post about soon. Till then, keep it safe and make some resolutions :))

Munich News

Lot of you might have heard of the "Free Hugs" campaign, which became even more famous with this video.

It reached Munich on Dec. 16. I missed it thou', its a great campaign with all this fightin and stuff going on in the world. Cheers for the organizers.

Secondly, for those of you who have visited Munich, most probably sometime for sure while walking down the Marienplatz area must have seen an old man playing piano "rock n roll". A thread on toy-town-munich has been started as the piano has been spotted abandoned near the area. More Info here.

Finally, I made it there

After years of staying here, I never could made it to Schloss Neuschwasnstein. Finally last week, we drove there. The castle's location is just awesome, surrounded by Alps, Lakes, Plains; but the castle itself from inside is nothing spectacular. But again, it was worth the visit.

can't get it out of my head

i am not a great shopper, I don't have the patience to go to every store and look for something I like. Since last month or so, I have been looking for some shoes, went to several stores in Munich too, mostly I don't like them & freaking expensive.
Finally while surfing flickr, I came across some shoe pics; and since then I can't get them out of my head. Searched several stores, even went to Hamburg (they have a store but no shoes :)); the only place they are available are zappos.com and they don't ship internationally.. f***; for all that web 2.0 crap and online stuff. **very annoyed**
it always happen, first i don't like & if i like somehthing.. can't get them, as some of you who worked at SCR with me last year might remember, it took me 2.5 months to find a pair of shoes.. same story ..
crap .. crap .. f***
damn, why can't i get them in europe .. any knows any store which might sell them online n ship

yeah, I know. Its been the laziest time for my blog. There are several reasons for it, being i have been travelling a bit around (Amsterdam, Hamburg, Hannover, etc etc); busy with paper work; paryting; etc etc...

the point of this post is that the blog is not dead ;)
